What is Cyanotype?
Cyanotype is a photographic printing process distinctive for producing Prussian blue monochromatic prints. It uses an ultra violet light source (in our case-sunlight) to create an image.
The Process:
The fabric is pre-coated with a light-sensitive solution. By placing and arranging various stencils, yarns, feathers, plants, and whatnots on top of the fabric and exposing it to the sunlight, a positive image is produced after washing off the unreacted solution with water.
The Hue:
The darkness and lightness of blue varies upon a number of factors: the length of time for exposure, the time of the day, the weather condition of the day, or even the time of the year. Generally, the middle of the day between 10 and 40 minutes in direct sunlight will produce a range of light faint blue to deep dark blue. Areas not exposed to any light will show up as white.
Can I wash the Cyanotype?
Yes. Cyanotype prints are archival. It is recommended to launder in cold water using non-phosphate detergents. Yellowing may occur if the fabric is exposed to phosphates or alkaline environments. Bleach and sodium may also cause discoloration.
For the fitted mask, remember to remove the wire/ pipe cleaner before washing to prevent rusting.

As an artist, I always encourage others to embrace happy accidents. If your mask does experience some form of discoloration, well then VOILA!...You have just personalized it in a way that’s truly a unique piece of art.
